but on top of 12 MP you have Carl Zeiss optic’s on the Nokia N8. Once you have taken your high definition picture you can show them off to your friends by making use of the HDMI connection. Using this you can display photos, videos and music of TV’s and projectors which accept a HDMI cable. As far as we know this is the first phone to offer this type of connectivity. It is also possible to share photo’s online a social networking has been integrated into this nokia mobile. It is very easy to make your Nokia n8 unique by adding your own widgets (available from the Ovi Store). The N8 has 3 live home screens, you may want to use one for work, one for play and one for the girl/boy friend :-).
The Nokia N8 comes in a anodized (silver white, dark grey, orange, blue or green ) aluminum casing. The screen on the N8 is a massive 3.5 inches with a 16:9 resolution (640 x 360) or more commonly known as HD. 16.7 million colours are used along with the ambient light detector / proximity sensor to ensure you screen always looks at is best and saves power where possible. According to the spec you should be able to get 50 hours music playback, umm…I’ve heard that before! This may well be true if all you did is listen to music and didn’t take one call, if this is the case buy yourself an iPod. It does bug me a little why they publish these totally useless statistics and treating all like gullible idiots. Why just not publish a stat that is more realistic to normal usage!
Nokia N8 Review – 12 MP HD (high-definition) Camera
As stated in the intro the Nokia N8 has a fabulous 12 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optic’s. To enhance photo’s took in poor lighting the N8 comes with a xenon flash. We are really pleased to finally see this as it has always been a bit of a sore point on previous n-series nokia, although we still think it should have been implemented by nokia sooner. As you would expect o a mobile of this caliber you have face recognition and autofocus, red eye reduction would have been nice too! Still image formats come in popular JPEG and EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format). The latter file format is very popular with digital camera these days. The camera on the N8 provides a zoom, 2x for still images and 3x for video (both in digital), we don’t think this sounds that impressive but we need to have a play with the camera before critising!Videos can be shot in HD (720p res) at 25 frames per second. There are settings to configure the scene, video light, colour tone and white balance. There is a photo editor as standard on the N8 and you can make use of the in-built GPS receiver by using geo-tagging, very useful if your lucky enough to be on a road trip. Saved Photo’s can be viewed tag cloud consisting of month, album or as a slide show. The nokia n8 has built-in connectivity to online share website where you can upload your photo’s so your friends can see what you have been up to, very popular with Facebook™ at the moment.
Nokia N8 – HDMI connection
One of the Nokia N8 unique features is the HDMI port which allows you to view photos and video on other devices (television and projectors) in high-definition digital 720p resolution. As Dolby Digital Plus technology is supported you can listen to music stored on your phone through your home theatre system and it will sound top class.Nokia N8 – Satellite navigation
Voice guided sat nav comes for free on the nokia N8, no need to subscribe here! We think this is a real bonus and looking at a 70/80 pounds a year saving. Simple enter into Ove Maps where you want to go and the device will guide you, by car or foot. There is also Wi-Fi® positioning, a compass and accelerometer which automatically displays the map in landscape or portrait depending on how you are holding the device. We suggest you use the nokia maps loader app to upload maps to the N8, if you download over your network provider you may get charged, and the maps make up A LOT of data.Nokia N8 Summary
I have to say initially the Nokia N8 looks very impressive. The spec list is truly massive and for me the big plus points have to be the 12 MP camera (xenon flash and Carl Zeiss optic’s), free sat nav and HDMI support. However the touch screen, navigation of the phone has to be up with and as responsive as HTC else it will fall flat on its face. There is no point having all this fancy technology if it is buggy and the nokia N8 is about as fast as a skoda! Im not saying this will be the case but am just a little wary after previous nokia phones where the initial features released get everyone buzzing but then you use it and are disappointed. A bit like listening to Susan boil on the radio then seeing her for the first time on TV!Anyway, we hope to bring you a full hands-on review as soon as nokia send us the N8 to test. Enjoy and keep reading.
